SalsaTO.ca's Dance - Fitness Background

SalsaTO.ca's Mike has been involved in dance and stage since the 70s - on stage and behind stage.

SalsaTO.ca's Mike & Sharon bring infectious energy, audience connection and playful choreography to the stage and the dance studio.

Choreographing, competing and performing salsa since 2002.
Performed in the 2008 and 2009 Winter Salsa Carnival, the Festival of Dance 2003, 2004.
Competed in the last of the fabled Berlin Toronto Dance (Salsa) Competitions, placing third in the amateur class.

Teaching salsa for absolute beginners for seven years.

Has appeared in several feature movies including How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.

Has performed, danced and sang in Gilbert & Sullivan operettas on stage as second tenor through two decades and worked backstage, as a choreographer, set builder.

Holds a degree in Education with an undergraduate honours history degree, qualifications in Adult Education.

SalsaTO.ca's Mike & Sharon continually learn new dance and stage techniques from recognized experts.

Has training in Ballet Jazz. Sharon has ballet training, including pointe.

Has trained under Dave Paris, Billy Fajardo & Katie Marlow - meticulous and the safest aerial, lift and drop specialists, world class judges and stage choreographers currently active in the North American and global salsa, ballroom and hustle scene.

Has trained under recognized Toronto specialists Angus Dirnbeck, Jennifer Aucoin, Vanesa Stay, Oscar Naranjo, Giovanni Torres, Elizabeth Sadowska.

Trained under North American and global entertainers, choreographers, performers and teachers Al Espinoza & Karla, Edie "The Salsa Freak," World Champions Oliver & Luda; UK based "Super Mario," a partner work specialist.

Been teaching aerobic dance and fitness for 20 years, teaches "Zumba without the Z," before it was trademarked and hit the mainstream, with elements of the West Indies, Cha Cha, and Brazil's Lambada.

Earned FOLP certification in movement, exercise design and musicality and have CanFit Pro training in exercise design and movement and choreography.

• Learn To Salsa -- Salsa I
  
  No experience required. Six weeks of fun while learning how to dance Salsa, a very sexy dance. Bring a Friend!
  
  Learn basic footwork; how to turn; how to work as a pair - leader and follower; basic combinations including cross body leads, breaks. Get a taste of Cuban, LA and New York style salsa elements.
  
  Learn basic musicality, where to start in the music.
  
  Time permitting - exposure to nightclub Cha Cha and Merengue, two very popular dances in nightclubs and at street festivals.

  Follow-on of Salsa I, more complex turn patterns. Basic "shines" footwork. More Cuban, LA and New York style turn patterns built from basic moves. Nightclub Safe Dip.
  
  Learn how to work pauses and stops in the music, elegant endings to a song.
  
  Recommended - Salsa I or three to six months of salsa, ability to lead & follow and keep time.

  Learn to execute leadable and Nightclub Safe tricks & dips for the dance floor or the stage.
  
  Leaders and followers, learn how to communicate and work together as partners to execute safe and fun tricks and dips.
  
  Dips I Solid Beginner or Intermediate level recommended. Partners recommended, but not absolutely necessary.
  
  Dips II Intermediate+ level recommended & ability to execute and lead travelling left turns. Partners strongly recommended.

• Salsa Tune Up
  
  Been dancing salsa for about six months
  - or even a year or more - and have questions or are stuck on a few things? Want to improve your lead and follow? Having trouble with the really fast music you hear at the socials or the clubs? Maybe want to add something new to your salsa?
  
  Or just have the blahs and want to rev up your dancing?
  
  Then let SalsaTO.ca's Mike and his Mechanic Sharon tune it up!
  
  Emphasis is on technique, not styling. Hear and work with different styles of salsa music; tidy up and improve lead & follow; work the breaks instead of chugging through them; learn how to work very fast music and feel on top of the music, not catching up; blast through any roadblocks to moving to that next level.
