Commentary

Three $3.50 Coronas is a small price to pay to see that money go to help supply clean water and food to the million plus people of Haiti who have nothing but the shirts on their backs.

Imagine the entire City of Mississauga being flattened, every hospital leveled, every building destroyed only one runway at Pearson open and most of the roads blocked or destroyed with the federal and the city government in complete chaos. No police or fire department left.

Throw everyone - young, old, rich, poor - out into the street with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Take away clean water. Take away their food and the places that they usually go to for food. --- That's what happened in Port Au Prince.

It will take decades to rebuild Port au Prince. It only takes part of one evening to gather some of the resources to start the re-building and to ship clean water and food and the means to distribute it to the people of Haiti who have been thrown out into the streets with nothing. Your donation will help the Haitian people continue to live and will give them the resources to start re-building their city and their homes.

The Canadian Red Cross has a solid reputation in applying almost all donation money directly to the cause. No middlemen, no agents taking their cut. And they have a proven track record in getting aid, or food or water or medical care and supplies to those who need it, As quickly as possible as conditions on the ground permit. The Red Cross knows how to open the doors to get the job done.

Go home after Dance & Donate with the feeling that you have done something beyond chatting on Facebook about how terrible things are in Haiti. Your money will help keep Haitians alive, salve some of their wounds and give them the tools to rebuild their lives, their homes and their city. Your help will give Haiti hope.

28 January 2010 Red Cross (ICRC) Backgrounder – Haiti Update

“As we begin to hear stories of hope from our operations in the field, we wish to thank the many generous Canadians who are helping support this vital work,” says Conrad Sauvé, secretary general and CEO of the Canadian Red Cross. “Funds raised will support the International Red Cross response [ICRC and Haiti Red Cross], and will also go towards longer-term projects, as the Canadian Red Cross helps affected communities recover and rebuild.”

Field Hospital In Haiti --- In Operation

The field hospital, which was funded in part by a generous contribution from the Government of Canada, is actively treating patients. The field hospital can provide essential surgical and medical care for up to 300 people per day and includes customized modules such as surgery, first aid and triage, a ward of 70 beds, a community health unit and a psychosocial support unit.

The International Red Cross has deployed 19 Emergency Response Units (ERUs); including the Canadian/Norwegian Red Cross field hospital. Over 200 international Red Cross delegates have been deployed within these ERUs. This operation represents the largest ever deployment of these international emergency response teams in the history of the Red Cross. ERUs include water and sanitation units, logistic units, information and technology and telecommunication infrastructure and field hospitals.

ICRC Water Distribution By Truck

Belekou, the most destitute quarter in Cité Soleil, sits between Route 9 and the seashore, crisscrossed by two canals of grey water overflowing with refuse. Thousands of families live in its metal shacks and hundreds live in its streets. For most, the only belongings seem to be a mat, a small stove and a few cooking utensils. Debris litter narrow alleyways where scores of families have been spending the night since the January 12th earthquake.

Delivery by water trucks, Water buffalos to use the old army term is helping to keep people alive until regular water service is restored.

Background

The Dance & Donate Fundraiser is charity in action. Dance & Donate would not have been possible without people giving up an evening's revenue and making themselves and their talents available.

Acrobat made their venue available - for free.
The DJs are playing music - for free.
All of the prizes from Toronto's Salsa Schools and more were donated - for free.
Luis Mario Ochoa, a bandleader, a professor at the Humber School of Music with 2 CDs to his credit and who plays with Juno winner Hilario Duran donated his set - for free!
SalsaTO.ca time and cell phone bill, printing costs are - free. Nor is SalsaTO.ca paying himself out of this event.

*All* the money that will be taken at the door, the tickets for draws and the fun tickets for games goes to the Canadian Red Cross. Dance & Donate is registered with the Canadian Red Cross. And all attendees will be asked to provide information for tax receipts that will be issued by the Canadian Red Cross. This is selflessness and altruism in action.
