Molika surprised a Toronto latin dance original - Afro-Cuban and Latin dance instructor and choreographer Ana Machado Saturday 2 January with a catered dessert table, a Cuban flavored birthday dance and, performances spanning Salsa's African and Hispanic and North American roots.
Ana was completely surprised when she made the long climb to the Dovercourt House 3rd floor venue!
Performances by SalsaTO.ca's Mike & Sharon who performed a theatrical "Walk In The Park" to a song by the American Jazz & Cuban influenced Mamborama.
Afro Latin Dance Company's Albena and long time Afro-Cuban dancer Bong Gonzales performed an Afro-Cuban dance. Bong has performed Afro-Cuban with Ana with at least one performance at Harbourfront's Rito y Color summer festival in the mid 2000's.
Fume Jahmez, from the Congo performed a pure African Routine showcased the origins of the Afro-Cuban so beloved by Ana.
Emerging African guitar artist Valu David who played one classic piece and one song off his debut CD. As an aside, ValuDavid will be playing Alleycatz on Wednesday nights.
Ana's birthday dance started with a Buena Vista Social Club classic that even had those used to dancing Colombian music moving!
Old and new friends turned out in number including: DJ Billy Bryans, Bong Gonzales, Albena, SalsaTO.ca's Mike, Giovanni Gorres, United Salseros' Rene Delgado, Teddy, iFreeStyle's Angus and Carol, and Molika.
United Salseros and iFreeStyle.ca presentd Ana with a new wireless base station and microphone and a carrying box for lessons.
