Imagine a one day Salsa congress; this is what they got last week-end at the Flying Dance Company's Niko and DJ Gury Gury's Northern Salsa Experience.
DJ Gury Gury brought 8 DJs - DJ Gury Gury; DJ Andito; DJ Javier Rivera; Efrian Flores; DJ Santiago; DJ Gio; DJ Nilson; DJ Alberth. They came in from Rocherster, NY; Clevland, Ohio; Guelph, Toronto and more.
Niko brought instructors from Toronto and his own Studio.
DJ Gury Gury and Niko brought live music c/o Toronto's Caché on the Thursday.
Oh yes, $4.50 Mojitos brought that extra dimension to the evening's fun!
And everybody brought themselves for Saturday's full afternoon of workshops and an evening party not soon forgotten!
From SalsaTO.ca Mike & Sharon's Nightclub Safe Dips Workshop; to the Manuel and Lucky Show / Mambo Class; to Niko's Afro-Cuban workshop, and a Casino Rueda Class, there was something for everyone.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the workshop afternoon was Los Salsomanos' Giovanni Torres and his Colombian Salsa. From the classic LP 33 1/3 music chipmunked to 45rpm, to the dizzying footwork, 70s and the present Cali came to life!
The apparent empty looking studios during the evening's party belied the actual number of people and the sheer size of both Flying Dance Studios. Two hundred plus people could easily fit into one studio. And there are two of them! Party goers were treated to two DJs, each one an event in their own right, playing the best tunes all night long!
Cache's Wilson and Juan Carlos dropped by to enjoy the buzz!
Gury Gury treated the back scene crew to an outstanding Indian dinner just as good as anything found on Toronto's Gerrard Street East. And he took the time to thank those present for their support, either through music, publicity, or presence for making the tri-city Salsa scene the growing centre of fun it is today.
