Five Years of iFreeStyle.ca
It was classic Mambo from the big three, from Fania and more Saturday 12 June as iFreeStyle celebrated five years of teaching Mambo / On2 in Toronto.
It was the glamour of New York City's fabled Palladium in the 50s that greeted them. Updos, shirtwaists, polka dots on the ladies, saddle shoes for some of the men, and shirts, ties, bowties and suspenders for more of the men.
The Jack & Jill Competition had them dancing shines or solos, Cha Cha, Calsa and Mambo. Montreal's Guesley Chery and NYCs Baila Society judged the proceedings. Two classes of dancers, Amateur and Professional went through fast paced rounds of eliminations.
Toronto Dance Salsa's ladies did a Cha Cha chair dance. iFreeStyle's performance troupes treated the audience to Bachata, On2 and a solo medley. NYC's Baila Society's spectacular show combined outstanding lift, dip and drop sequences.
And food, what is a night at the Palladium without food. Moe catered the the entire meal. Nary a crumb was left.
The Estonian House anteroom was transformed into a history of Mambo with info, album cover art and a special draw that had the entrants complete a quiz using the history. Prizes included everything from a pole dance to make-up to a sound machine.
DJ Nilson played music that kept them moving throughout the evening - all classic NYC Mambo tunes.
