Oscar and Tania gave workshop people a rare glimpse into the world of apparent death defying performance lifts and drops Saturday with their Lifts and Dips Workshop.
After a warm up and basic stretch that Oscar said was very important to do before starting any lift or trick, five figures, including a neck drop and four lifts were demonstrated and taught over 2 1/2 hours.
Using the whole body to take the partner's weight, the importance of strong core for leader and follower and the follower holding the body very very firm were emphasized throughout the afternoon. Ladies also learned that hair is very slippery and to keep it off the napes of their necks for neck drops.
While most of the pairs got the figures working, Oscar stated that a lot of practice was required to get them working smoothly, consistently and on time to music. Oscar also demonstrated different entries and exits, how to use different parts of each figure as a stop or a pause with the music. Tania or Briia patiently endured spending much of the afternoon in the air.
The workshop also gave them an idea of the amount of work that goes into making a performance smooth. While brute strength was not required to execute most of the figures, body positioning, using the legs and back to take weight, strong core, keeping the partner within the leader's centre of gravity and developing consistency and trust with the partner all combine to make performance possible and safe.
